My sweetie sitting on deck. You have to take a ferry to get to Mackinaw Island [there is no bridge to it].
We always enjoy going to Mackinaw Island. There are no non-commercial motor vehicles on the island.
One of the main means of transportation is by horse.
They have beautiful carriages in which to tour the island. They also have horse drawn taxis - which are like your old hayride wagons - with benches to sit on instead of hay bales - and no hay to stuff down someone's shirt.
With horses you get a different form of
pollution!!
This is the main means of transportation on the island.
[I guess you would have to not count walking.] Mackinaw Island is where we developed a love for biking.
I was one unhappy guy! Kind of depressed for a couple days.
Mem Day morning I was out on a 30+ mile bike ride - kind of warm - kind of thirsty (I should have gotten a 2nd water bottle) and about 3 1/2 miles from home my front tire slipped off the pavement. This has happened before - I know not to try and immediately get the tire back up on the pavement - it should be a gradual adjustment. Well, tired me, unfocused me, DUMB me, I tried an immediate correction which caused my tire to turn sideways - which made it act like a super brake - and up over the handlebars I flew. I am not a small guy - so if you cringe [thank you] - or chuckle [like my friends did] at the mental picture of that - no hard feelings - it gets better...
[Just the week prior - I bought new pedals with toe clips - great for when you need stand up for some extra leverage - great to pull up on the pedal as you go up hill - BAD when momentum pushes your feet INTO the clips when you really would like your feet to come OUT of them]
My feet in my trust toe clips caused the bike to come flipping over with me - WOO-HOO - what fun. Where is someone with a video camera when you need them.
I crossed my forearms and caught myself on the pavement - then they folded under me and compressed my chest - I know I said something - that sounded goofy even as I said it [no - I didn't cuss - Praise # 1] it was something like "Aw, rats!".
Okay, so I 'recover' and take a few deep breaths because my chest is hurting - I want to make sure I can breath and that no ribs are cracked. So far so good [Praise # 2]. I drag my bike off of Page Avenue - it is a pretty busy road - no one made Bumper Casserole of me [Praise # 3]. The bike seems okay [# 4] and my knees are just a little bloody [# 5] and I am able to ride the bike home.
Tuesday, though, I went to Chelsea Hosp at the "encouragement" of family and friends - and had my elbow x-rayed - and found I had actually fractured the tip of my radial bone - in my right arm {I am right-handed, too}. Almost immediate depression - I knew that that meant my Pedal Across Lower Michigan trip for the end of June was canceled. The Dr. confirmed that - and told me I wouldn't be riding my bike for a while [I know there should be a Praise # 6 and # 7 in here somewhere - that came later - and reluctantly]. I felt bad for my buddy Marsh who was going to go with me on the trip.
But I am in the recovery stage - my range of motion with my arm is getting much better. The ability to pull, lift, twist, etc... is still not very good at all. I didn't get put in a cast - just a sling to keep in my mind the idea that I am to restrict my use of the arm.
44 1/2 - and my first broken bone - not too bad.
Last week was a great week!
I picked my Dad up at the airport Monday afternoon. It was real great to see him. Last time we were together was a short weekend when David graduated.
I took the rest of the week off to spend time with him. I did get up early to go for a bike ride - that was nice. Had a flat one day - had to take the bike to the shop to get it fixed. Dad bought me some new pedals with cages on them. That was cool. Rob went with me on Friday - there was supposed to be a light mist - it was a very thick mist - and we got drenched - think I have a slight cold as a result.
Had to still go to AA a couple times to pick up and drop off Tonja's transcription work. Dad went along - good times.
Took Dad out for a ride one night - just to show him some of the places I ride - and get him out of the house. We got to see a bunch of deer (herd of deer, deerses - whatever) which was nice - they are so pretty I still enjoy seeing them. Don't mind eating 'em either.
Lyndsey's Graduation ceremony was very nice. The slide presentation the seniors did of the kid pics was great.
Lyndsey got a nice graduation gift from her grandparents on Tonja's side - a nice Toshiba laptop computer. That is a necessity for NTBI - and a cool tool for personal use, too.
Saturday was her open house - that went real well, too. A lot of folks had other things to be involved in because of the Holiday weekend - but a lot of folks came out.
So her high school career is officially over. Sad in some ways - glad in a whole lot more other ways.
